Simply Explained: Domains

16 Sep 2025 | Written by Peter Orwa, Junior.

The first step when it comes to setting up a website online is registering your domain name. Think of it as your website’s home address. Just like your house needs an address so people can find it, your website needs a domain name so people can visit it online.

Domain names explained

A domain name is that text you type into your browser to visit a website. Like google.com, facebook.com, or yourname.com. It’s what people will type to find your business online.

Without a domain name, your website would have a complicated address made of numbers (like 192.168.1.1) that nobody could remember. The domain name system translates your easy-to-remember name into those numbers behind the scenes.

What Makes a Good Domain Name?

Keep it simple: Your business name is usually your best bet. If “Smith Bakery” is your business, try smithbakery.com first.

Make it memorable: Shorter is better. If people can’t remember it or spell it easily, they won’t find you.

Avoid hyphens and numbers: These create confusion. Is it smith-bakery.com or smithbakery.com? People will guess wrong.

Common Domain Extensions

Domain extensions are the last portion of your domain name. At times they have very specific meanings (like .gov referring to websites owned by or affiliated to a government). Currently, there are a plethora to choose from and in most cases it’s purely preference — though be careful not to confuse your audience with an extension than can be off-topic. For example, a restaurant having a .tech extension can be misleading and give the wrong idea.

Some common extensions are:

  • .com – The gold standard. Get this if you can.
  • .co.ke – Great for Kenya-based businesses
  • .org – Usually for non-profits
  • .net – An alternative if .com isn’t available

How Much Does It Cost?

Domain names typically cost $10-15 per year for .com, or about 1,500-2,000 KES annually. You’re essentially renting this address, so you’ll need to renew it each year.

In conclusion…

Your domain name is often the first thing people see about your business online. Choose something clear, simple, and professional. It’s a small investment that makes a big difference in how people perceive your business.
